What You’ll Do

In this role, you will drive the seasonal trend development, including color palette selection, concept ideas, and key silhouette direction for each delivery. This person will forecast trends in fabric, color, and silhouette for the children's market and will manage line development from initial concept through production phases. This person will be responsible for over-seeing 18-24 distinctly unique product assortments per year. The Apparel Design Director will also be responsible for giving print and artwork direction to the Graphic/Textile Designers for each delivery. This role works closely with the VP, Merchandising to ensure correct product assortment and well-balanced lines. This individual will be responsible for shopping the market for trend information, inspiration, and ways to continue to grow the business, as well as, review competition as it relates to product, quality, and aesthetic.

Job Requirements

What You’ll Bring

  • BS/BA degree with 10+ years’ experience designing apparel for major retail garment manufacturers, preferably focused on kids wear and female gender
  • A minimum of 5 years management experience managing a team of at least 4 – 6 people, from Sr. Designer to Design Assistant
  • Specialty retail experience preferred
  • Mandatory: Fully proficient with Photoshop and Illustrator. Ability to use In-Design, Kaledo, PLM a plus
  • Ability to identify broad apparel and fashion trends, disseminate that information into viable, creative conceptual presentations that both inspire the executive investment stakeholders (CEO, and Senior level cross functional partners in Merchandising) and provide creative, clear design direction to the designers
  • Experienced working with the merchandising / sales team to identify areas of growth, or potential growth
  • Ability to strategize in partnership with merchandising to find new, creative ways to grow the business by introducing “on-trend", viable new product ideas while maintaining cost targets
  • Excellent color sense and ability to create saleable seasonal color palettes that flow seamlessly from season to season while still providing a vision of newness to the customer
  • Ability to identify print and graphic direction that continues to refresh the product while at the same time builds upon a general, yet distinct brand point of view
  • Experience collaborating with the Print and Graphic Director and Sr. Designers as well as other cross functional sr. design team members to ensure that the design and product sensibility compliments the other products offered within the brand
  • Successful experience working with production and technical design teams to ensure accurate and cost effective execution of designs
  • Ability to call upon past experience to trouble shoot and/or creatively solve product development/bulk production issues when and if they arise
  • Experience working with overseas vendors and traveling abroad to production facilities. In depth knowledge of fabrication (knits / wovens/ sweaters) and graphic and print production utilized on the types of garments produced for the brand
  • Must have strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with the ability to meet deadlines and work with all levels of the organization
  • Requires a hands on approach (designing actual product as well as directing)
  • Willing and able to backfill roles of direct reports temporarily during periods of staff transitions
  • Experienced and comfortable giving presentations to the Executive/CEO level
  • Experience traveling domestically and internationally to identify trends and select inspiration samples to bring back to communicate future ideas to the sales / merchandising team. This role will be required to travel internationally at least 2 times per year and domestically 2-4 times per year
